Beauty salon insurance, and what each insurer publishes
Beauty salon insurance is bought for the treatment, not the room. Waxing, facials, lashes, brows, peels, microneedling and injectable work each sit in a different place on an insurer's appetite, and the same salon can be a routine risk on one treatment list and a declined risk on another. That is why the price you are quoted rarely looks like the price on the advertisement, and why the treatment declaration is the most important thing on the form.

What decides a beauty salon premium
- The treatment list, in the insurer's own words. Every insurer publishes a schedule of treatments it will write, and the wording matters: a policy that covers facials may exclude needling, and one that covers lashes may exclude lash lifts. Match your actual menu to that schedule line by line before you buy, not after a claim.
- Qualifications and training records. Beauty policies are normally conditional on the therapist holding a recognised qualification in the treatment performed, and on the salon keeping evidence of it. Insurers rarely ask to see the certificates at quote and almost always ask at claim, so the file has to exist from the first day the treatment is offered.
- Patch testing and consultation forms. The condition that decides most beauty claims is procedural. A signed consultation and a patch test at the interval the product manufacturer states is what turns an allergic reaction from a refused claim into a paid one, and insurers write that condition into the policy rather than leaving it to good practice.
- Whether anybody else works in the room. Employers' liability is compulsory once anybody is employed, including a part time receptionist or a trainee on placement. A renter is different again, and the salon should hold a copy of the renter's own certificate rather than assume its own policy reaches them.
- The equipment, not just the liability. Lasers, IPL machines, needling pens and steamers are both a liability question and a contents question. Machine based treatments push a salon into a higher rating band, and the machines themselves are often the largest single item a contents section has to replace.
Common questions
- What does beauty salon insurance normally include?
- Public liability for injury or damage on the premises, treatment liability for harm caused by the treatment itself, product liability where you sell or apply retail products, employers' liability where you have staff, and usually contents and stock. Cover for machines and for loss of income after a fire or flood is often optional.
- Are injectable treatments covered?
- Rarely on a standard beauty policy. Botulinum toxin, dermal fillers and similar procedures are written on aesthetic or medical malpractice terms and normally require a clinical qualification. Several of the insurers in this record write them only through a separate scheme, which is worth establishing before you add the treatment.
- Does the policy cover a mobile therapist as well as the salon?
- Only if the policy says so. Working at a client's home, at a wedding or at an event is a different exposure from working in your own room, and mobile work is usually either an endorsement or a separate policy. It is one of the most common gaps found after a claim.
- How much public liability cover should a beauty salon carry?
- Most UK salon policies are written at £1m, £2m or £5m of public liability. The right figure is usually set for you by whoever you contract with: a landlord, a shopping centre or a local authority licence will name a minimum, and that minimum is the floor rather than a judgement about your risk.
