About Insurance by Profession
Insurance by Profession publishes one thing: what UK business insurers and trade schemes print about their own prices, trade by trade. Every figure on this site is quoted verbatim from the insurer's own page, carries the day it was read, and is re-fetched and matched before it ships, so a page that has repriced fails the build rather than shipping a stale cell. Around the record sit guides to the trades and to what actually moves a premium.
Why this site exists
Because business insurance advertises a starting price and sells a rated one, and almost nobody publishes the gap. Several of the best known names on this shelf print no price at all, and a comparison that quietly filled those cells with numbers lifted from worked examples would make the market look cheaper and more transparent than it is.
Who it is for
UK sole traders, contractors and small business owners buying cover for their own trade: salons and therapists, tradespeople, photographers, cleaners and consultants. It is written for somebody deciding what to buy and what a starting price really means, not for brokers and not for insurers.
What it does not do
- No recommendations. This site does not name a best insurer, does not rank on merit, and does not arrange cover; it is not authorised to and does not pretend to be.
- No invented figures. A price appears only where the insurer printed it, and an insurer that prints none is listed with that fact rather than with an estimate.
- No paid positions. Nobody can buy a place or a position in this record.
- No quotes. This site does not collect your details and has no form behind which an enquiry could be sold.
What is on this site
15 guides, each with its sources on the page , 504 answers to the questions around them .
- Salons: A salon buys three things at once: public liability for the client who trips on a trailing cable or is burned by a machine, treatment liability for the harm a treatment itself does, and employers' liability the moment anybody other than the owner works in the room.
- Beauty salons: Beauty salon insurance is bought for the treatment, not the room.
- Hairdressing salons: Hairdressing is a chemical trade, and its insurance reflects that.
- Nail salons: Nail work concentrates two risks that most salon policies treat separately.
- Tanning salons: A tanning salon that runs sunbeds is the one beauty trade whose insurance sits directly on top of a statute.
- Photographers: A photographer's insurance has to do two jobs that pull in different directions.
- Cleaning businesses: A cleaning business is insured against the property it works on rather than the property it owns.
- Electricians: Electrical work is insured on the consequences of getting it wrong rather than on the size of the job.
- Plumbers: Plumbing claims are water claims, and water is the most expensive thing a small trade can release into somebody else's building.
- IT consultants: An IT consultant is almost never sued for hurting somebody.
- HR consultants: HR consultancy is advice with a tribunal at the end of it.
- Business consultants: Business consultancy is insured on the size of the decision the client made because of you.
- Management consultants: Management consultants sit in front of the decisions that cost the most to unwind: restructures, operating model changes, systems selection, cost programmes.
- Consultants: Consultant is the widest job title on this site, and the insurance behind it is narrower than it sounds.
- Cyber insurers compared: Searches for the top cyber insurance companies are looking for a shortlist, and the honest answer is that a ranking by brand is the least useful way to choose one.
Where the figures come from
GB business-insurance starting prices verified against each insurer's own published pages on 2026-09-11 by infra/ingest/hubs/insurancebyprofession.com/ingest_vendors.py: every quoted figure re-fetched and matched verbatim (hash-pinned). 8 of 17 insurers print a monthly starting price; 7 (tradesmansaver, abtinsurance, salongold, directlineforbusiness, admiralbusiness, constructaquote, craftcover) print none and are listed with that fact.
Who answers for it
Joseph Ellul, Operator, Ellul MT. Responsible for what this record says and for correcting it. A correction that names the insurer, the figure and the page it was read from is acted on.
