Most sports coaches assume they are covered by the club, the school or the leisure centre they work at. Almost none of them are, because those policies insure those organisations and a self employed coach is a separate business standing on their floor.
Whose policy covers the session
A club insures the club, a school insures the school, a leisure centre insures the centre. A self employed coach delivering a session is a supplier, and every one of those organisations will ask for their own certificate before allowing it. Coaches employed by a club are a different case and are covered by the club's employers' liability, which is why the first question is always whether you are employed or self employed for that particular session.
What the governing body scheme includes
Many national governing bodies arrange member cover giving affiliated coaches a baseline of public liability and sometimes personal accident. It is good value and usually narrower than it sounds: it may cover coaching within affiliated club activity only, may exclude private sessions and one to one work, and may exclude coaching a different sport. A coach doing private sessions alongside club coaching should read which of those applies.
Coaching children
Most grassroots coaching is with children, which brings recruitment checks, safeguarding training, a photography policy and supervision arrangements at drop off. Abuse allegation cover is a named extension in policies for this market. Insurers also ask about qualifications, first aid provision and what happens if a parent does not arrive, because those are the ordinary situations where things go wrong.
Where you coach, and what you carry
Parks usually need a local authority consent for commercial use, schools require insurance and checks, and private facilities set their own requirements. Equipment carried to sessions, goals, cones, balls, timing gear, needs cover that travels rather than sitting at a home address. Online and remote coaching is a separate declared activity in several wordings, because the supervision that defends an in person claim is absent.
Questions people ask about sports coach insurance
Am I covered by the club I coach at?
Only if you are employed by it. A self employed coach is a supplier, and clubs, schools and leisure centres will require your own certificate.
Does governing body membership cover private sessions?
Often not. Scheme cover is frequently limited to affiliated club activity and may exclude one to one and private work, so read the scheme terms.
What does coaching children require?
Recruitment checks, safeguarding training and a photography policy, and abuse allegation cover is a named extension in this market.
