Lash extensions put a fast curing adhesive within millimetres of an eye, on a client who cannot see what is happening. The claims follow from that, and so do the conditions the policy attaches before it will pay one.
The claims this work produces
Three dominate. An allergic or irritant reaction to cyanoacrylate adhesive, which can appear hours later and affects the eyelid and the eye. A corneal or conjunctival injury from adhesive, a tool or a tape. And damage to the natural lashes from poor isolation or aggressive removal. All are harm caused by the treatment, so treatment liability is the operative section and a policy sold on its public liability limit alone is not covering the work.
Patch testing, and the condition attached to it
Almost every wording in this market makes patch testing a condition where the manufacturer requires it, with a stated interval before the first appointment and after a change of product. It is the most commonly breached condition in the beauty sector, because clients want an appointment sooner than the interval allows. The record of the test, the product used and the client's answers is what the insurer defends with, and its absence is usually the end of the claim.
Declaring each service, including removals
Classic, hybrid, volume, mega volume, lash lifts, tints and brow work are separate declarations, and lash lifts and tints involve chemistry with its own reaction profile. Removals using solvents are their own risk. A technician who adds a service after renewal has a policy describing the old service list, and the new service is the one most likely to produce the first claim because it is the newest skill.
Where you work, and whose room it is
A technician working from home needs the household insurance question answered as well, since clients visiting for payment is business use. Mobile work needs treatment away from fixed premises stated in the policy and kit cover that travels. Renting a room or a bed in a salon makes you a separate business, and the salon will normally want your certificate before the space is let.
Questions people ask about lash tech insurance
Is an adhesive reaction covered?
Under treatment liability, provided the service was declared and the patch testing condition was met with a record of it.
Do lash lifts and tints need declaring separately?
Yes. They involve different chemistry and a different reaction profile, and cover follows the declared service list.
Am I covered working from home?
Only with a business policy. Household cover generally excludes business use, and clients visiting for payment is business use.
